The Way of the Wolf Page 11
First Sergeant Haney smiled, then stood up and reached across the table to shake my hand. I stood as well and shook with him, and then he dismissed me.
Several times during this memoir, I referred to my life beginning for the first time, the second time, etc. I don't know how many beginnings we're up to at this point, but this was probably one of the most important ones.
The day after I graduated basic training, I got onto a bus and was transported to Fort Benning, Georgia. The first phase of my training would be airborne school, where I would learn to jump out of airplanes. Considering my enjoyment of flying, I was really looking forward to it.
My special forces training took even less time than First Sergeant Haney had expected. I completed it in just over thirteen months, and was immediately sent to my first tour of duty in Afghanistan. I had finally found a place where it seemed I belonged, and I couldn't have hoped for anything better.
So much has happened since then, that I don't think I could possibly write it all out here. I've done three tours of duty in the Middle East, two in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. I spent one tour as a drill sergeant, doing my best to emulate Drill Sergeant Paulson and teach my recruits how to, hopefully, not get themselves or their buddies killed. I've been sent on a few special missions, but I think those are still classified.
And, of course, there's that incident, the one that put me on death row. You already know about that, though, so I won't bother filling in the details.
So, I guess that's it. I was told to write out this little biography and to be as blunt and honest as I could about who and what I am. I've done so, and so I guess all that remains is for you to decide what to do with Pinocchio, because that's pretty much who I am. I have no emotions, and no conscience. For all intents and purposes, I am not actually a human being, no matter how I try to look and act like one.
It's as I said in the beginning, I think. I am a wolf in man's clothing, thinking and acting in whatever I consider to be in my best interest, regardless of how it may seem to anyone else, while at the same time doing everything I can to maintain my disguise. From what I know of this organization, I feel that I might be an asset, but that isn't for me to decide. It's for you, and I hope this gives you everything you need to make the right decision.
I appreciate the opportunity to join your organization, and I'm glad you're putting me back to work in protecting my country. Please believe me when I tell you that I will do the best job for you that I can—so long as I believe it's the right thing to do. If I ever come to doubt that, then things may change.

Enjoy This Book? You Can Make A Difference
Reviews are the most powerful tools in my arsenal when it comes to getting attention for my books. Much as I’d like to, I don’t have the financial muscle of a New York publisher. I can’t take out full-page ads in the newspaper or put posters on the subway.
(At least not yet, anyways!)
But I do have something much more powerful and effective than that, and it’s something that those publishers would kill to get their hands on:
A committed and loyal bunch of readers.
Honest reviews of my books help bring them to the attention of other readers.
If you've enjoyed this book, I would be very grateful if you could spend just two minutes leaving a review (it can be as short as you like) on the book’s Amazon page. You can go right to the page by clicking below.
